Picture?

[edit]

How does an article so long and complete about arguably the best female football (soccer) player of all time, doesn't have a picture? Miguelfp1 00:18, 14 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Points

[edit]

My excellent deductive qualities tell me the 'points' are goals*2 + assists, but would it be possible with a link/explanation of how and why a 'points' category is necessary and what its function is? Coming from Europe, I haven't seen this attempt to 'mix' the two functions, goals and assists, before, and in Europe the assists don't even figure in any statistics (however unfairly to the supporting players), other than the extremely devoted sources, so I take it it's an American tradition? Poulsen 14:36, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just put it down to an American fascination with applying a huge amount of stats to all sports. Assists are commonly recorded in Basketball. Just be glad they don't also give you the yards gained, number of shots made / missed / on target, etc etc as they do in American Football!--Richardb43 03:52, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What was her number?

[edit]

In the picture it looks like #9, and that's the same as I remember from having watched her on TV, but was she always #9? Did she have different numbers in WUSA, with the National Team, at UNC, etc.? A short discussion of this would be helpful, since athletes are often paid tribute to & recognized by their numbers. (E.g. Michael Jordan #23) --Jefs 15:17, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mia was number 19 at UNC. I believe it has since been retired. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.214.170.252 (talkcontribs) 22:00, December 14, 2006
She was #9 when in the WUSA and #9 whenever I saw her on the national team, which doesn't include her earliest years. Kevinwparker 16:44, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

her number at unc was #9 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.191.112.27 (talk) 23:20, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This article listing retired numbers of UNC women's soccer players has Hamm as #19, and this image shows her wearing that number while in Tar Heel blue. Kevinwparker (talk) 20:45, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hamm's Position

[edit]

Given that this is an encyclopedia article, shouldn't Hamm's position be in the summary? I'm assuming she was a striker, but really such fundamental information should be in there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.78.131.139 (talkcontribs) 04:49, July 12, 2006 she was a foward, right midfielder and once a goalkeeper —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.191.112.27 (talk) 23:19, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Error in statistics

[edit]

"Hamm retired with 158 international goals, more than fifty ahead of any other player (male or female)". That is currently incorrect as Iranian footballer Ali Daei currently has 109 international goals, only 49 goals less than Hamm's total goal count. I know its a small error, but it is an error nonetheless. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.80.172.175 (talkcontribs) 14:52, July 31, 2006

Siblings

[edit]

Hello. User:71.155.237.145, just changed the number of siblings that Mia has. Can anyone provide any references to back-up the changes? Without references, it is difficult to know whether the old version is in error, or the new version. Please see WP:V and WP:RS for our policy on the need for information to be verifiable, and for guidelines on what constitutes a reliable source. Thanks, Johntex\talk 01:44, 6 December 2006 (UTC) she had a brother and he died.[reply]

I know when Mia just started on the National Team, her brother, Garret died from complications related to aplastic anemia. A good website is [1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.59.117.1417:22 (talkcontribs) December 11, 2006

Women's national team? Duh

[edit]

Anyone else questioning the need to add the qualifier "women's" in the section header describing Hamm's service to the US National Team? Was there any question that a female player would be on the women's team? - RPIRED 23:26, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The word "women's" is there because some sports are only for men or women. Women's is just there to tell you which team. Some people might think she played for the men's team or something else. "I don't care what you think" 13:50, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uh... who would think that? Just offhand. I mean, we don't use "men's" as a qualifier for male athletes. - RPIRED 00:17, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For tennis they use men's and a whole bunch of other olympic events. "I don't care what you think" 22:25, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

U.S. 1991 World Cup Squad template

[edit]

A series of templates for U.S. Squad <yyyy> Woman's World Cup were just added. One does not yet exist for {{United States Squad 1991 Woman's World Cup}}. As such, I commented it out on the article page. Please uncomment it once it has been created. — ERcheck (talk) 12:14, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mia born with clubfoot condition

[edit]

There are dozens of articles, including some in wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clubfoot , mentioning Mia as a famous person who had a clubfoot deformity when she was born. I think including this fact into her biography not only would demonstrate her willingness to overcome a disability as part of her strong personality but would also be a great source of inspiration for kids with this condition. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.229.121.209 (talk) 05:25, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Goals?!

[edit]

"she scored more international goals in her career than any other player, male or female, in the history of the sport (158)." I think this is very inaccurate. Search for the Pelé article, says: "Pelé's goalscoring record is often reported as being 1280 goals in 1363 games", that is 1122 more goals than Hamm. And there are male players everywhere that had scored more goals than Ms. Hamm. This should be corrected. I'm not a native English speaker, so I won't do it. --Yogagye (talk) 15:46, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The operative word you missed there is "international". Most of Pele's reported goals were for club sides, I think. How many "A" international goals did Pele score? --Mosmof (talk) 16:42, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lead Para POV

[edit]

Seems the lead is written as an advocacy of her and of Title IX. There's no conclusive evidence to say Title IX allowed her to have a scholarship. She could have gotten one without Title IX's help. That and it being written as pro-Mia. I'm a fan of hers but this is not written NPOV. 161.185.151.150 (talk) 17:58, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello, there is an article here, http://www.encyclopediaofalabama.org/face/Article.jsp?id=h-1369, that might be useful. Thanks, Justin --Duboiju (talk) 13:30, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Team 1993–2001?

[edit]

Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but what did Mia Hamm do, on club level, between 1993 and 2001? Was she married and raised children (or other stuff) during those years?--Paracel63 (talk) 09:15, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There was no 'club level' for professional female soccer players in the United States until 2001, when Women's United Soccer Association was formed. Before that, it was virtually all national team competitions. - 75.178.13.124 (talk) 07:22, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

1998 GOODWILL GAMES/ MIA HAMM

[edit]

Good morning, I realize that nothing is mentioned of Mia participating in the 1998 GOODWILL GAMES that was held in New York City. In particular, Track and Field events were conducted at Mitchell Field Long Island, Nassau County, where I was assigned a Security role while representing Navy Recruiting District New York. That position gave me the opportunity for Mia to autograph my Goodwill Games T-Shirt.

Mia Hamm gave birth to a son. It is listed on Mia's parents page for a foundation for Mia's brother Garrett. Her parents discuss how Hamm's son was named after her deceased brother. http://walklosangeles2011.aamds.org/Markslist/campaign/display/profile.do?campaignId=7474 is the site Alenab1124 (talk) 15:16, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unclear statement

[edit]

Greets: "She also leads the team with most assists with 144." is in the beginning of the article. That bit doesn't mention which team is being discussed and the portion discusses I believe 3 different teams. No reference is provided either. Can someone clarify please? Thanks --168.215.131.150 (talk) 18:29, 25 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • All four paras in lead start with (±Mia) Hamm.. - try to mix things up a little.
Updated. Hmlarson (talk) 01:24, 3 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Soon her whole family became very involved in the sport - "very" unnecessary
Updated. Hmlarson (talk) 01:24, 3 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hamm played sports beginning at a very young age - scans oddly, why not just, "Hamm played sports from a (very) young age". I'd also ditch the "very" as comes across as laboured and redundant.
Updated. Hmlarson (talk) 01:24, 3 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • North Carolina only lost one game in the ninety five she played on the team - I'd say "of" not "in" here.
Updated. Hmlarson (talk) 01:24, 3 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • there was no fully professional women's soccer league in the United States - is the word "fully" needed here? was the predecessor league part professional or amateur?
Updated. Hmlarson (talk) 01:24, 3 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • It'd be good if we could add anything to the Washington Freedom, 2001–03 section to buff it up a bit. Also, try to figure a way to avoid having a one sentence paragraph...
Expanded. Hmlarson (talk) 20:52, 18 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Endorsements section is slim. Anything about how much the endorsements were for or anything else to buff the section would be good.
Expanded and moved under In Popular Culture header. Hmlarson (talk) 20:52, 18 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • You mention Garret Hamm and aplastic anemia in two separate sections, if this could be rationalised somehow to reduce repetition that would be good.
Updated. Hmlarson (talk) 01:24, 3 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • It would be good to use the Burke biography as an inline ref - e.g. on page 28 it says Garret died after 10 years of the disease.
Updated. Hmlarson (talk) 01:24, 3 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • In fact, I'd dispense with the further reading section - these books should either be the source of content or dropped.
Updated.Hmlarson (talk) 06:34, 3 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Web references should all have accessdate, date, author etc. Some are link only. And there is at least one deadlink.
Updated.Hmlarson (talk) 06:34, 3 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Overall, looks good. Am trying to give it a big a shove as possible towards FAC. It'd be great to get this on the mainpage. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 09:53, 31 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Time magazine cover

[edit]

After much digging, it doesn't look to me like Mia Hamm is featured on the Women's World Cup cover of Time that's cited in the "In Popular Culture" section.

158th Goal

[edit]

The section labeled "2004: 158th international goal and Athens Olympics" should say "2004: 150th international goal and Athens Olympics". It is clear that the 7/21/2004 goal was the 150th goal based on the "international goal" section. 170.202.22.106 (talk) 16:34, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
