[edit]was there an ethnic name for shuadit-speaking jews? to a certain person on here: yes, i already know what you are going to say...
ethnonym for shuadit-speakers
[edit]If you know what I'm going to say, then why ask? ;-) I refer you, however, to my comments on Talk:Zarphatic, since the answer I gave you there is true, word for word, for the Shuadit-speaking community, except that this is "southern France" rather than "northern France". :-p The only other important difference is that the Jewish communities in southern France date back much further, but differences among Jewish communities, and the consequent development of ethnonyms for various Jewish communities, developed as a result of isolation of various communities because of restrictions imposed upon Jewish movement and communication by Christian (and to a lesser, and later extent, Muslim) rulers. For the most part, these restrictions did not apply on a grand scale until the consolidation of the authority of the Roman Papacy... By the time Shuadit had become little more than a memory, these differences were not sufficiently engrained to constitute this community's recognition as sufficiently "distinct" to be known to other Jews as anything but Jews. The greatest distinctions between the Sephardic and Ashkenazi communities developed in the 15th through 18th centuries. -t Tomer TALK 05:44, Apr 6, 2005 (UTC)
- i'm not by any means an expert in the "standard" provencal language, or the people who speak it, though i plan to do some research on this subject when i get around to it.
- i am however somewhat more familiar with the french language, which i hear has quite a few dialects in france alone. (there are also dialects of french in other countries, of course, such as canadian french for example).
- grrrrrrrrrrr Please, I beg you, in the name of Wikipedia etiquette, STOP USING HORIZONTAL RULES TO SET OFF YOUR COMMENTS ON TALK PAGES. I refer you AGAIN to my comments on your talk page Talk:205.208.159.171! Also, PLEASE, sign your posts...I refer you AGAIN to my comments on your talk page. As for standards for Provençal, none exist. It is a much-oppressed Occitan language, as are all non-French languages in France. This is not, of course, a platform for expressing utter disgust with the government of France, present or past, despite the fact that there can be little doubt from my tone in this sentence, that I hold at least its language policy in utter disdain. As far as your comments on the French language, they are especially irrelevant wrt to Shuadit, although somewhat more relevant to Zarphatic. French does, indeed, have a tremendous variety of dialects. That notwithstanding, such commentary is probably more relevant on Talk:French language rather than on either Talk:Shuadit or even Talk:Zarphatic. Tomer TALK 09:59, Apr 6, 2005 (UTC)
- I now see that it is probable that you are accessing the Internet, and the Wikipedia in the process, from a poorly-defined domain, probably a university campus or other local internet host, given your comments and contributions. This only strenthens the request I made to you on Talk:205.208.159.171 that you CREATE AN ACCOUNT. With an account, it is much easier to address you on a personal level, to say nothing of the need to track you down on the terminal you happen to be using at any given time and readdressing concerns to you given information so-obtained. PLEASE. Create an account. Tomer TALK 10:04, Apr 6, 2005 (UTC)

Etymology?
[edit]What is the etymology of "Chouadite" שואדית? It's tempting to think that "Chouadi" is derived from יהודי yehudi "Jew", but I don't know of any sources for this. —Moxfyre (ǝɹʎℲxoɯ | contrib) 21:18, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
Issues with this page
[edit]The content of this page should be moved to Judeo-Provençal. The word Shuadit is a pseudo-glottonym erroneously coined by Szajkowski, has it has been shown by Strich, A. 2015. “Judeo-Occitan (Judeo-Provencal).” In Handbook of Jewish Languages. Leiden: Brill, 517–551, and again by Nahon, P. (2021). Modern Judeo-Provençal as Known from Its Sole Textual Testimony: Harcanot et Barcanot (Critical Edition and Linguistic Analysis), Journal of Jewish Languages (published online ahead of print 2021). doi: https://doi.org/10.1163/22134638-bja10014.
The latter article by Nahon brings a wealth of new data about Judeo-Provençal that should be included in the WP article. As English is not my native language I do not feel confortable doing it myself, but maybe User:TShilo12 or User:Moxfyre can do it?.
In case you don't have access to Brill paywall, it is available here: https://www.academia.edu/58609524/Modern_Judeo_Proven%C3%A7al_as_Known_from_Its_Sole_Textual_Testimony_Harcanot_et_Barcanot_Critical_Edition_and_Linguistic_Analysis_?email_work_card=title Fuligo septica (talk) 15:15, 23 October 2021 (UTC)
