Notification of proposal to ban Spanish articles from Did You Know?
[edit]Dear WikiProject Spain member,
There is currently a proposal to ban articles concerning a large area of southern Andalusia from appearing on the Main Page of Wikipedia in the Did you know? section. This would affect a significant number of articles within the scope of WikiProject Spain. If you have a view on this proposal, please see Wikipedia talk:Did you know/Gibraltar-related DYKs#Proposal for one-year moratorium on Gibraltarpedia DYKs. DYK for Pan Am Flight 923
[edit]On 20 November 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Pan Am Flight 923, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that although Pan Am Flight 923 was the deadliest commercial aviation accident in Alaska at the time, the cause of the crash remains unknown? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Pan Am Flight 923. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |
Gatoclass (talk) 08:13, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
A long time ago you made this edit[1] which include adding this text- 'It was the first fatal crash of a commercial airliner in the United States in nearly 21 months, the previous was a mid-air collision of Allegheny Airlines Flight 853 with a Piper PA-28 on September 9, 1969.' I removed it because it is incorrect WP:OR. Between the Allegheny and Hughes crashes, there were at least this[2], this[3], and this[4], fatal U.S. aviation accidents involving commercial airliners. All are small accidents, none of which have an article, but the aircraft were all used or are used by commercial Air carriers. Just letting you know....William 18:49, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
- This one was a training flight, this one was a charter. Not sure about the Pilgrim Airlines flight, but I think it was a charter. (I'd have to verify via the NTSB report.) If I have time I'll see if I still have my annotated bibliography floating around so I can find where the original fact came from. 71.56.222.63 (talk) 19:07, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
- (Previous comment was me, sorry.) Mûĸĸâĸûĸâĸû (blah?) 19:10, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
- Oh never mind, I left the quote in the citation! Look at ref # 27 on the article. The quote from the article is: "It was the first fatal crash in the United States of a scheduled airliner since an in-flight collision between an Allegheny Airlines DC-9 and a student pilot's plane left 83 dead near Shelbyville, Ind., on Sept. 9, 1969". I may have converted "scheduled airliner" to "commercial airliner". The "21 months" may be WP:OR but is counting months really a no-no?
- Also it looks like you only removed the summarizing sentence from the lead instead of the (cited) fact from the "Aftermath" section. Was that an oversight or intentional? Mûĸĸâĸûĸâĸû (blah?) 19:12, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
- The accident report[5] on the Pilgrim crash said it was an schedule air taxi flight. As for newspapers, they do make mistakes and sometimes their writers make the same mistake repeatedly. Don't ever get me started on Doug Ferguson of AP and how many times he said the PGA Tour had been playing in the Washington D.C. area since. The mistake was accidental....William 19:20, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
- We're both missing the elephant in the room. How about Mohawk Airlines Flight 411?...William 19:29, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
- Well there you have it. Clearly the newspaper is incorrect -- perhaps they meant the first collision involving a scheduled airliner? Good catch. (Also the air taxi article indicates that an air-taxi is an on-demand charter service, so the Pilgrim crash may be more of a charter than a regularly-scheduled domestic. But I know nothing about the topic.) Mûĸĸâĸûĸâĸû (blah?) 19:37, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
- We both made mistakes and worked on getting it fixed together. I should have checked the templates for the obvious first.(If you checked out the 1969 accident template, 6 of its 17 articles were created by me. Viasa, Olympic, Aswan, Allegheny Flight 737, Nigeria, and Air France.) When ever I read something hasn't happened since.... I have a habit of checking. Back in 1971 there was no internet available to reporters to check on this stuff.
- A day after the Hughes crash, Allegheny Airlines Flight 485 happened[6]. That crash has been on my short list of articles to do for a long time. I got to stop being lazy....William 20:03, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
- The nomad reference in the edit summary refers to this[7], which destroyed anything that was imperfect. Check it out or maybe you've watched Star Trek too....William 20:03, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
"See and be seen" or "See and Avoid"?
[edit]Hi Mukk!
Thanks for all of your edits and contribution, especially the aviation-related ones! I've been a pilot since 1980, and I have to say that learning to fly changed my entire life for the better. I noted your interest in getting licensed, and I encourage you to do it while you're young!
From time to time, you have used a phrase that I've not seen elsewhere: "See and be seen," and I am curious about its origins. As far as I know, the FARs only mention in 14 CFR 91.113 (b) the phrase "see and avoid," and in 34 years of flying that is the only usage I have ever heard discussed among pilots, controllers and aviation writers. Is "see and be seen" perhaps a British colloquialism, much as the American phrase "in the pattern" vs. the British "in the circuit" or "gasoline" vs. "petrol?"
No biggie, just curious...

Wiki Loves Pride 2014
[edit]Hi Mukkakukaku. In case you are not aware, there is an upcoming campaign to improve coverage of LGBT-related topics on Wikipedia, culminating with an international edit-a-thon on June 21. See Wiki Loves Pride 2014 for more information. If you are interested, you might consider creating a page for a major city (or cities!) near you, with a list of LGBT-related articles that need to be created or improved. This would be a tremendous help to Wikipedia and coverage of LGBT culture and history. Thanks for your consideration, and please let me know if you have any questions! --Another Believer (Talk) 16:33, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Listowel
[edit]Hello Mukk. I'm still in the learning process about reliable sources and citations. Can that unclear citation tag in the Listowel, Ontario article from February 2011 come off now? SlightSmile 17:04, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
- Hello, @Slightsmile:. Unfortunately, no, it really needs to stay there. If you look at the references section, there is no consistent referencing being done -- there's a mix of bare URL's, {{cite}} templates, manually entered refs. Furthermore, if you actually try to follow some of the purported reference links to verify the information, many of the links have issues. For example:
- The IMDB reference for the film production company requires a subscription (so I can't verify), but also IMDB is not considered a reliable source in general because of WP:UGC.
- The references for the paragraph about the Capitol theater is the homepage of the theater, which mention any of the facts in that paragraph. A business's own website is a primary source; articles should be referenced mainly on secondary sources (see Wikipedia:WPNOTRS)
- Many of the websites used as references do not have an access date, so it is not possible to go find the version of the page the original contributor used as a source.
- There is a ref like this: "Pratt (1992). Imperial Eyes. 1-2." It is impossible to tell what this is. If it's a book, it's missing key info -- ISBN, author's first name, edition, etc. Without at least the publisher and edition, those page numbers mean nothing.
- Hope that provides a bit more clarification. -- Mûĸĸâĸûĸâĸû (blah?) 23:52, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
- It does, thanks. Four years and still things to learn. SlightSmile 00:05, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Newspapers.com check-in
[edit]Hello Mukkakukaku,
You are receiving this message because you have a one-year subscription to Newspapers.com through the Wikipedia Library. This is a brief update, to remind you about that access:
- Please make sure that you can still log in to your Newspapers.com account. If you are having trouble let me know.
- Remember, if you find this source useful for your Wikipedia work, to include citations with links on Wikipedia. Links to partner resources are one of the few ways we can demonstrate usage and demand for accounts to our partners. The greater the linkage, the greater the likelihood a useful partnership will be renewed. Also, keep in mind that part of Newspapers.com is open access via the clipping function. Clippings allow you to identify particular articles, extract them from the original full sheet newspaper, and share them through unique URLs. Wikipedia users who click on a clipping link in your citation list will be able to access that particular article, and the full page of the paper if they come from the clipping, without needing to subscribe to Newspapers.com. For more information about how to use clippings, see http://www.newspapers.com/basics/#h-clips .
- Do you write unusual articles using this partner's sources? Did access to this source create new opportunities for you in the Wikipedia community? If you have a unique story to share about your contributions, let me know and we can set up an opportunity for you to write a blog post about your work with one of our partner's resources.
Finally, we would greatly appreciate it if you filled out this short survey. Your input will help us to facilitate this particular partnership, and to discover what other partnerships and services the Wikipedia Library can offer.
Thank you,
Wikipedia Library Newspapers.com account coordinator HazelAB (talk) 22:16, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite
[edit]Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. March Madness 2017
[edit]G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

- updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive
[edit]G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
- updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Atthis (bird)
[edit]A tag has been placed on Category:Atthis (bird) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
