[edit]Alternative Fiction seems to be missing from Wikipedia. - Kimiko
And yes, I know the standard answer is "write it yourself then". I'm not expert enough to write such an article, I'm just adding a note (and probably in the worng place at that). - Kimiko 21:20 Apr 17, 2003 (UTC)
Beware REDIRECT
[edit]Really correct? Two or more options?
[edit]In the German Wikipedia there has been a discussion about the word "Alternative", which is similar to the English word.
The conclusion was (as stated by some people capable of Latin), that an alternative is always the other of exactly two options (Latin "alter": the other of exaclty two). Maybe this is relevant for the Engish Wikipedia, too.

- Regardless of the word's etymology, "alternative" usually means "other" or "outside the norm" in English. Few words from other languages can keep entirely the same meaning when brought into other languages -- compare Japanese "hentai" with English "hentai", for example. --BranER
- I was looking for word alternative and i wanted this. Perhaps best choise is to redirect this page to Alternative (disambiguation)! --CONFIQ 20:04, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
- Why did you come to an encyclopedia when what you apparently wanted was a dictionary? Ewlyahoocom 08:25, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- Hi! Thanks for redirecting Alternative. While you're at it please fixup the 200 or so links that now need disambiguating. You can find the list at Special:Whatlinkshere/Alternative. Enjoy! Ewlyahoocom 20:46, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Ewlyahoocom! Let's see what other people think about this and let's decide... best regards --CONFIQ 20:56, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
- Sure! I'm happy to wait. But don't let that delay your getting started on those dismbiguations. On those 200-or-so pages, simply change any instance of
[[Alternative]]
to[[Alternative rock|Alternative]]
, or similar accounting for capitalization, etc. Most of them will disambiguate to Alternative rock but there's no dobut a few that should link to a different Alternative page. Don't worry about wasted effort: no matter what ends up happening with Alternative, the links you will have disambiguated won't be affected. Ewlyahoocom 21:11, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Addition
[edit]I'm just adding a link to alternative comics since I thought it's relevant. Naurgul 11:29, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
alternative music
[edit]alternative music and alternative rock Both Link to the same place. I decided that all forms of Alternative music should be in the same place and rather than having a link to both alternative music and alternative rock I just left tit as alternative rock because alternative music often referred to alternative rock. [1]. This edit was partially reverted. I feel it would be helpful to link to Alternative rock#Styles because it would help people disambiguate quickly without scanning the whole page. It appears most alternative music is alternative rock or a sub genre of it. Could we make Alternative music (disambiguation) or list of Alternative music styles or List of Alternative music genres to help people disambiguation. I have been fixing a lot of music related Alternative links and many new links that will point to this page are music related we should have an effective disambiguation page for handling music and for letting people who are fixing music disambiguation to know all the choices to make the best fix. Although alt Hip Hop is not a form of alt rock it is a form of alt music and alt music most often means rock because tats what they call in in Europe or something like that. I think this page has enough different disambiguation-es that each Link should be under a more general topic like
in music
[edit]in education
[edit]in society
[edit]But of course not everything fits perfectly under an umbrella topic so why do you suggest. It is a shame to have the music ones not under one title. I chose them all to be under Rock because rock was the most common alt music and the other ones are. I did say other types of alt music in my edit and tried not to clam hip hop was a type of Rock but rather a type of music. But to change the main title to alternative music rather than rock would make most people just click on the link be redirected to rock
Can somebody list all the alternative music under Alt rock and other alt music. That would help me a lot in my disambiguation link repair--E-Bod 21:29, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
How about this for categorization(continued from above)
[edit]Pleas fix this up--E-Bod 21:37, 7 May 2006 (UTC) This could be as a section or just in bold--E-Bod 21:38, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Or we could have an Other category for the small ones. But having them not separated makes a user waist to much time looking at it--E-Bod 21:38, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- I don't really dig all these categories with only one entry, it just seems like overkill. I think the better way to "categorize" this would be to have those things which are ever actually referred to as just alternative (i.e. Alternative rock) at the top, then the ones that could conceivably be referred to by the term in a may also refer to section, and the rest just deleted and possibly replaced with a link to Special:Allpages/Alternative. Have you had a look at the Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages)? Ewlyahoocom 23:18, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Alternativism
[edit]Alternative is a disambiguated term. Alternativism is a philosophical perspective and lifestyle. My intention is to seperate the two into specified articles, but as of right now this page is a placeholder for all references to alternativism. Due to personal time-constraints it may be a short while before I can write up the philosophical Alternativism article, so please be patient (unless someone feels like getting it started). I will complete a full write-up eventually. E. J. Mattos 02:28, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Disambiguating music genres
[edit]I, like a few other people who have commented on this page, have just spent a few hours disambiguating links to Alternative. I have, with few exceptions, linked all references to the alternative music genre to Alternative rock from where there are links to the other alternative music genres. I've also had Alternative (disambiguation) deleted as it was serving no purpose (this page is the dab page for alternative)msgj (talk) 18:30, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
