AFDs

[edit]

Hello, Visviva,

I just wanted to say that your participation is a welcome addition to AFD land. We get so many new editors jumping into deletion discussions, casting "votes" that thoughtful comments and evaluations of articles and their sources is noticed and appreciated. We have a turnover in participation in AFDs so thank you for giving your time and attention to helping determining what happens with articles on the project. Liz Read! Talk! 04:42, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Aw, thanks! Glad my contributions have been of some use. -- Visviva (talk) 01:39, 24 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You know, I go through most AFD daily log pages each day and tonight I saw a new editor cast votes of "per Visviva" on 8 or 9 different AFDs. You've got a fan! They are a very precocious new editor and show that a little knowledge of Wikipedia policy can be used as a weapon sometimes. I lost my temper with them on one AFD so I have to remember to be patient. Liz Read! Talk! 07:41, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your dedication to this work is truly impressive. Wikipedia is lucky to have you and so are all of us! The new user seems sincere and I hope things go well for them, although AFD is an awfully rough place to start out. -- Visviva (talk) 03:07, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Help with Harassment?

[edit]

Hello! I am very new to Wikipedia and feel as though I'm being harassed by another user who focuses on the area my first edit proposal in a talkpage was. I'm very confused about what I am supposed to do about this and am on the verge of quitting already.

Could you offer any advice? AevumNova (talk) 18:11, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AevumNova, welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for trying to contribute. I hope you'll stay with us, and I'm really sorry that you're having such a tough time. It seems to me that the discussion has gotten a little too personal, and in my experience the best thing for that is to take a step back and let things cool down. I did notice in the DRN discussion that you mentioned you were struggling with the complexity of the Wikipedia rules. I know someone else made this suggestion already, but I think you might find this whole situation easier to navigate if you spent some time working in less exhausting areas first. I can understand if that isn't a very satisfying answer, though.
Protected pages tend to have protectors hanging around who are very skeptical of proposed changes and also sometimes of the proposer's motives (sometimes for good reasons). Talk:Holodomor in particular is always going to be a pretty tough and skeptical crowd. I think you made some good points, but I noticed that you seemed to be having a hard time communicating to other editors the exact edits that you wanted made. I think you might get a clearer idea of how to do that if you get some firsthand experience doing non-controversial editing work elsewhere first.
Anyway, sorry I can't be more helpful, but again, I really appreciate your efforts to make Wikipedia better, and I hope you'll stay with us. -- Visviva (talk) 18:43, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate it. I am just going to need to at least take a break. This has just been really disheartening. Especially being accused sometimes subtlety and sometimes less so of being aligned with IRL forces I am vehemently against. AevumNova (talk) 18:45, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think I may have found a very good editor who might help you with Australian aspects of this topic. I took the liberty of asking already at User talk:Jack4576/Archive 2#A new challenge?. Thanks for taking this on!

Hello!

[edit]

Hi, Visviva,

I've missed your thoughtful, regular presence in AFDs recently. I hope you are just taking some well-deserved time off to enjoy this summer or taking a short WikiBreak. I've detected some discouragement about the current state of the project, feeling which can sink in whenever an editor slows down editing enough to take in the big picture. I've been here 10 years and things have changed, some for the better, others maybe not so. But I would hate for that to keep you from contributing. I value your presence and the civil tone you bring to sometimes very heated deletion discussions. It helps lower the toxicity that can sometimes creep into some discussions. We desperately need to keep competent and polite editors on the project. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 02:02, 14 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Liz! I appreciate you. I have been a little short on time and spoons lately but am hoping to get back into things shortly. Visviva (talk) 20:33, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article History of the kisaeng has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

WP:REDUNDANTFORK of Kisaeng#History. Save the introductory paragraph, all the information contained in the article proposed for deletion is copied directly from the main Kisaeng article, where it has also been further improved and expanded upon. The scope of the topic is also likely not broad enough to warrant a separate article to cover its history in the first place.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. 104.246.217.171 (talk) 02:51, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Good call. I guess we'll see if anyone objects, but it won't be me. I think it's fair to say that this split was not properly done, as I never reduced the source section to a summary. In any case history has not been kind to these "History of X" splits. -- Visviva (talk) 03:39, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Korea-related Wikipedia disambiguation tools indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. plicit 14:56, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Chicago Meetup for Wikidata Day

[edit]

Hello! This is User:Luiysia (IRL name is Kelly). My main interests are fashion, music, literature, and history. I am fairly new to Wikipedia editing and I found that there has been very little activity from the Chicago Wikipedia user group since 2020.

I'd like to host a casual meetup in Chicago to celebrate Wikidata Day on Saturday, October 26.

Proposed location is Engine Coffee in the Wicker Park/West Town area, at 11AM.

Here is the official meetup page, where you can add yourself as an attendee.

(If you would prefer not to see messages like this, go ahead and take yourself off this list.)

Hope to see you all there!

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

Nomination of Adam Kotsko for deletion

[edit]
A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Adam Kotsko is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Adam Kotsko (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article until the discussion has finished.

Accel (company) - assistance requested

[edit]

Visviva, Hi! A little over a year ago, you were helpful in a deletion discussion about the article for Accel (company). As an employee of Accel, I have undertaken updating and improving the article and would be grateful for your help now. My suggested improvements and updates are detailed here: Talk:Accel_(company)#Consolidation_and_Clarity. Could you please review? If you think these changes are OK, I can implement on my own. Thank you for your time and feedback, SClay53 (talk) 19:36, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, SClay53, and thanks for your efforts. Unfortunately, for reasons that are probably obvious from that discussion and its outcome, I am not currently disposed to get any further involved with this subject matter. Perhaps some future descendant of today's Wikipedia can do a better job on articles of this kind. More practically: here in the present, if you do choose to pursue your proposed change further, you may want to take a careful gander at WP:RSP and especially the entries for TechCrunch, CNET, Forbes, and Business Insider, on which your proposed change seems to rely rather heavily. (To be clear, I have not attempted to evaluate the specific articles you cite.) -- Visviva (talk) 22:40, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
