- 1871 – The first narrow gauge railway in North America, the Toronto and Nipissing Railway, using a track gauge of 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm), opens.
- 1897 – The Kansas, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway, a predecessor of the St. Louis - San Francisco Railway, is incorporated in the Oklahoma Territory.
- 1999 – The RER E line opens in France, serving the eastern suburbs from Magenta station (pictured).
- 2001 – The Maitry Express passenger train begins regular revenue service between India and Bangladesh.
