Soho works/ foundry/ manufactury
[edit]We need to set this out better to help the confused reader. I think that the article may be wrong in that it is the Soho works, not foundry, that is now Avery's. This link has some info [1] Cutler 22:31, Jul 11, 2004 (UTC)
Local Government
[edit]I believe that certainly in the early sixties, Smethwick was part of Birmingham, being known as "Birmingham 40". At this time it would have been in neither Staffordshire or Warley. Perhaps this was for postal reasons rather than local government ? Cabinscooter 08:00, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
- Smethwick has never been part of Birmingham. Prior to 1966 it was a County Borough within Staffordshire, between 1966 and 1974 it was within Warley County Borough, again part of the geographical county of Staffordshire. Since 1974 it has been part of Sandwell Metropolitan Borough. It does have a "B" postcode and 0121 telephone numbers though. Fingerpuppet 20:23, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- Note: The previous discussion entry was changed by 82.47.180.251 on 3 July 2008 to read "Smethwick has always been a part of Birmingham. Prior to 1966 it was a County Borough within Birmingham. It does have a "B" postcode and 0121 telephone numbers though." Reverted. Essin (talk) 22:42, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
- Smethwick was never part of Birmingham. For a start Smethwick was in the county of Staffordshire and Birmingham is Worcestershire. Just because the Royal Mail chose the route the post through the Birmingham sorting office and British Telecom gave it the Birmingham dialling code does not make the local council part of Birmingham. MidlandLinda (talk) 23:09, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- Apparently somebody on the IP address 82.47.180.251 has been vandalising the article repeatedly for a long time to move Smethwick from Sandwell to Birmingham, even changing the talk-page contributions of other editors. Editors should be vigilant. //Essin (talk) 22:42, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Birmingham was actually in Warwickshire but that is irrelevant to this discussion. Certainly, Smethwick has never been in Birmingham. This site seems to have been subjected to deliberate vandalism. CHARGEHAND (talk) 19:15, 29 November 2015 (UTC)
Previous industries.
[edit]How about adding that there were brass works (an off shoot of the Birmingham works) that gave their name to Brasshouse Lane. It was called Halford's Lane before that. They were established about 1780 and continued into the 19thC. The site was taken over by Beasleys and Farmer as the District, Steel, Iron and Gun Barrel Works in 1851. Though gun barrels had been made in Smethwick on an unknown site from the 18thC.

- Brasshouse Lane ran off Halfords Lane and both roads are still in existence (2012). So this information, while independently sourced, is inaccurate. --TammyMoet (talk) 21:42, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- Both lanes exist now, but is there proof that the name Brasshouse Lane was in use prior to 1780 when the brass works were founded next to the lane. There is no reason to consider the information inaccurate. MidlandLinda (talk) 14:53, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
recent population
[edit]This article still has the 2001 population, even though the most recent census was took in 2011, three years ago. Most other cities and towns have the newer figures already. 82.141.95.243 (talk) 19:03, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Apparently there is no new data for this town, although there has been almost 4 years from the census. 82.141.94.229 (talk) 13:32, 12 February 2015 (UTC)
