[edit]- William Cavendish engaged the philosopher Thomas Hobbes as tutor to one of his sons.
I have removed that sentence from the article, because it is wrong. The William Cavendish who hired Hobbes was one of the earls descended from this Sir William, because that was in 1608, when Sir William had been dead for 50 years and so had no son young enough to have a tutor. -- isis 16:40 Oct 23, 2002 (UTC)
He was also the founder of the pipe tobacco named after him
