Signature?
[edit]I think a photo of his signature is fitting for a player of his calibre. Does anybody know a source that can be used? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.205.149.204 (talk) 15:34, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
Lyrical contributions to Dream Theater
[edit]I just added the line "as well as the band's main lyricist", since Petrucci's writings form the bulk of Dream Theater's lyrics.
This seems a bit overstated. Petrucci has contributed a lot more lately, but I would credit Portnoy with writing a great deal as well. Since KevMo's departure I'd say Portnoy & Petrucci split songwriting roughly half & half. ShaneCarey 18:31, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
Photo
[edit]On the JP's official website, this foto is said to be from G3 tour, so isn't it rather from 2001 or 2005 ? I deleted the image at the request of the copyright holder, who says he never released it under the GFDL. Impressive :P
[edit]"John is happily married to his wife"
Wow, I couldn't imagine such a thing! :PPP nihil 19:22, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
if u see his earlier concerts, he has a more flashy stage presence.. the kind a guitarist normally has.. he would move more around the stage.. njoy his music.. for example the concert at marquee with kevin moore in the band... the band displayed a chemistry on stage! though in the past few years it seems 2 have subsided.. even though they may have a chemistry among themselves, they dont seem 2 show it on stage now. But no doubt, they probably play the best stuff ever.. achieved another level in music!
- Well... since DT music gets faster and faster over time, Petrucci likes to rest his left feet on a block in order to keep the guitar steady while playing the thougher parts. You just can't expect him to play like he does while running and jumping on stage. That's Labrie's job ! :) --Zoury 20:27, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- I always wondered why he's so stiff in the latest concerts. --iggyzizzle 20:34, 23 December 2006
- Youthful competitive drive's running out of steam, no longer a rockstar kid challenging himself towards ever tougher flashier stuff...? But since it's is trademark style, unless he manages to pull a Blackmore's Night-style turn at reinventing himself, his enthusiasm for it no longer much matters, cause he's a middle aged married professional with a DEMANDING JOB in a cutthroat industry, and now the virtuoso stuff that got him famous is his cross to bear... its a freakin job requirement now in a job that had extreme fitness/dexterity prerequisites to begin with, and he knows he needs to keep getting "better" and show "growth" to continue provide for his family. It's like the Aleve commercial with the older hardhat contractor, keeping up is getting more physically demanding but a mans gotta do it --- hence bye bye jumping around, hello life's lil crutches snuck in when needed. and hey, good posture and a bookend beats the hell outta the usual working man's cocktail of "caffeine + painkillers to move, muscle relaxants to sleep" or its hard polydrug rockstar version of "speedball to begin or keep moving, benzos and booze to fall or stay asleep"... Good on him that he's still out there doing his thing, vs how most guys "deal" with such issues in music - dropping out when stuff gets tough like a quitter, slowly cashing out the remaining name recognition with subpar new non-efforts like a hasbeen, or keeping up doped to the gills on borrowed time. Bookend? Boohoo.

Flamenco
[edit]I can't seem to recall his playing flamenco style, he may have done it but I think it's too much to say it in the very introduction...
I believe the Reference may be to the break @ 7:00 in "Another Dimension" from Liquid Tension Experiment 2........ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.137.119.204 (talk) 23:59, 10 October 2007 (UTC)
Check out An_Evening_with_John_Petrucci_and_Jordan_Rudess the song Furia Taurina has a lot of flamenco influence. 99.237.208.184 (talk) 01:42, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Correction and Assistance?
[edit]The last Dream Theather CD with Derek Sherinian was Once In A LIVEtime...and...I'm looking for the template used at the bottom of the page for Dream Theater if you can help for other artists - very nice page, well done! Tvccs 18:13, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
Okay, but the last studio album with Sherenian was Falling Into Infinity. 142.68.52.52 (talk) 03:18, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
Lost Without You
[edit]Does somebody know if "Lost Without You" is just a John Petrucci song, or a Dream Theater song also? --Λeternus 19:44, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- It's on his solo album Suspended Animation, so it's his. --Dayn 03:11, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, but i have a Dream Theater version of the song also, where keyboards are used (in Suspended Animation there are no keyboards used). So, who released it first? From the sound (quality) of the song, it seems that Dream Theater's version is an older one. So, what do you think? --Λeternus 18:39, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
- Dream Theater version? On CD, or from filesharing? Can't see it from any of Dream Theater's discography, so perhaps they played a live version of it...--Dayn 00:12, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe, but the sound of the audience isn't noticed... --Λeternus 16:20, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
- It's not a Dream Theater song, Petrucci played this song with Jordan Rudess on their "An evening with Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci", and I think it might have also been played with Liquid Tension Experiment but I'm not 100% sure on that one. --Ar73m 13:11, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- Awesome, that would explain it! Although the tracklisting doesn't have it. Nah, it wouldn't be Liquid Tension Experiment, they broke up six years before Petrucci's Suspended Animation. --Dayn 13:28, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
Actually Petrucci wrote that song a long time ago. And that song was played live with Derek Sherinian on keyboards, that recording is available thorugh Ytse Jam records it´s an official bootleg called Tokyo, Japan 10/28/95 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.102.0.68 (talk) 21:36, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Fake Death of John Petrucci
[edit]This was only a rumor spread on a forum. Yes, I almost had a heart attack, too. Here is the link to the hoax. http://www.jemsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53504 and now to the generator http://insert.name.here.swellserver....ies/auto80.php . Fake. --iggyzizzle 00:38, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
- Oh god, don't do that! You're gonna spread a heart attack epidemic! At least say it's fake first... *hyperventilates* --Dayn 07:04, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
- Fixed. --iggyzizzle 20:29, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
- Lol, that's good. I keep getting a twinge of fear when I read this. --Dayn 04:22, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
- Haha. I know what you mean. I just saw on Yahoo! Answers someone asking if John Petrucci was dead a couple minutes ago. I guess I'm not the only one. --iggyzizzle 20:40, 24 December 2006
Hair
[edit]From Dream Theater's new promo foto (Image:DT2007.jpg), it looks like Petrucci has grown his hair. Another fact can be tracked from G3's new poster, where John is clearly seen with long hair. Can somebody confirm this? Oh my God, is this another Metropolis part 2 era? --ΛэтєяиuS 21:24, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
- Confirmed. --ΛэтєяиuS 11:17, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
Biography errors
[edit]Willy1234x1 20:16, 3 July 2007 (UTC)willy1234x1 I noticed a few errors, his idols for one. Steve Vai being the main one. Steve is 47 and John is 39 so therefor John couldn't have been trying to mimic his idol Steve Vai when he first started.
- Steve Vai wasn't an early influence, but however, needing more of a technical challenge, John's fingers demanded adapting the hammering speed & melodic style of players such as the Steves (Steve Morse & Steve Vai), the Als (Allan Holdsworth & Al DiMeola), Mike Stern, Joe Satriani, Neal Schon & Eddie Van Halen. See www.johnpetrucci.com/bio.html. --ΛэтєяиuS 21:49, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
Willy1234x1 05:44, 4 July 2007 (UTC) Then shouldn't it be edited toward the middle of the biography that they became idol's of his if they're ages don't differ to far from each other? I don't know I just thought it strange that a sentence or two after him being twelve it says his idols were people near his age rather than older.
Middle Name 'Peter'
[edit]It says on other Wikis, both the Italian one and the German one, and it has been doing so for long time. --83.108.42.40 20:27, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- The middle name must be removed, because there is no reference. It doesn't matter if other Wikis say that, they don't have references neither. --ΛэтєяиuS 20:16, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- According to his official biography [1], his middle name is actually 'Peter' (see the start of the 2nd paragraph). I'm not sure how to actually add this to the article while citing properly. 99.235.231.10 (talk) 16:53, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- Done. --ΛэтєяиuS (talk) 20:04, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Equipment section out of date
[edit]The equipment shown on this section appears to be what was used during the Train Of Thought tour. I think it should be brought up to date using this information http://www.johnpetrucci.com/gear.htm.
I should also point out that the MIDI footcontroller used during the ToT tour wasn't custom built for him. It was in fact a Skrydstrup R&D SC1 with a XT Extension http://www.skrydstrup.com/pages/products/midi_controllers/index.html. On the Bukokan DVD he said it was made my someone in Denmark, but that was because if you look on the main page http://www.skrydstrup.com/ it mentions that all the controllers are hand made by the owner Steen Skrydstrup. hence the misconception. This was replaced with the Axess Electronics FX1 (with FX1 expansion) later. --Repner1 (talk) 18:06, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm. I'm not convinced that we really should have such a detailed description of his equipment at Wikipedia. Currently the "equipment" section makes up a very big portion of the article but I don't think it's quite that relevant. We shouldn't list every single piece of gear he has used over the years. --KFP (talk | contribs) 19:36, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- I agree with you...it should be greatly cut down, or out altogether. Carl.bunderson (talk) 08:06, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
- That's a good idea. Better no info, than info that's taken from an earlier tour. Repner1 (talk) 00:31, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
Why does this section list Petrucci's amps and effects, but not the guitars he plays (which last I checked, are custom made Ernie Ball Musicman guitars)? 203.223.185.194 (talk) 07:45, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Who took out the gear section? Who cares if it's out of date, it was my favorite part and the only reason I frequently visited the page — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.182.195.235 (talk) 00:02, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
- It has been removed because Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. --Λeternus (talk) 09:14, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
Singer?
[edit]Recently, user:OmegaXmutantX added Category:American heavy metal singers and Category:American male singers here and on Mike Portnoy's article. Can Petrucci and Portnoy be considered as singers only by providing some backing vocals? --ProgressiveAeternus (talk) 16:24, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
Influences reference/citation
[edit]I don't know how to edit wiki very efficiently, but it is verifiable (at least partially) that JP's influences have been mentioned during the course of his instructional video, Rock Discipline. I'm not certain of the verbatim content on the video, but he admits that his list of influences is almost entirely comprised of "Als and Steves." He then mentions Allan Holdsworth, Al DiMeola, Steve Vai and Steve Morse specifically.
If anyone who knows how to do this stuff well is willing to add it as a cite, we can eke away at the flag at the top for lack of verifiable references. I hate when pages that don't have much wrong with them are flagged at the top. Especially when it's for someone who isn't exactly surrounded by controversy. Simply, he's a delightful songwriter, and an athlete on the guitar. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.93.144.18 (talk) 23:35, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
Equipment list relevance?
[edit]Why does this article have an entire list of Petrucci's equipment (that is also very hard to read)? Someone who has interest in this should move it to the "Black Clouds and Silver Linings" article and re-format it.fdsTalk 00:00, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
dave mustaine number 1 metal guitarist? this has to be a joke surely?
[edit]this opinion that dave mustaine is the number 1 metal guitarist by joel mcIver is ridiculous.. obviously this is a subjective opinion but to hear something so ridiculous as this has to be rectified..i am not suggesting who is the best player..if i had read vai petrucci gilbert etc i would not have said any thing but dave mustaine as number 1 metal guitarist should b kept to joel mcIvers' book and should not be in wikipedia..i am honestly sitting here in shock reading this after looking up john pettruci on an another matter..megadeath fans will no doubt disagree with me..but put JP and mustaine next to each other playing..honestly is this a joke?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cam01235 (talk • contribs) 11:20, 5 May 2011 (UTC)
Vai and gilbert werent listed for the author didnt consider them to be metal guitarists, also the list also took into account the influence certain guitarists have. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dmoloney (talk • contribs) 22:21, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
"and should not be in wikipedia." I have to agree with this, and concerning all of the accolades, especially in the introduction. Perhaps if it were in an accolades section, but even then, these magazines put out countless awards to countless professionals at some point in time. An encyclopedic article for a professional musician should be to simply inform readers of their identity so they can know who they are. I don't think that people's opinion of someone is part of their identity. If a reader becomes interested in the person based on their identity, then stuff like this can be found with a quick and simple web search. The equipment section I also believe is in violation of WP:NOT and several policies and guidelines based on policies, particularly because it 1) lists information that is arguably trivial and has nothing to do with the person, 2) reads as being promotional or advertising, 3) is information that only fans would be interested in, hence why I added the fancruft template the other day, and couldn't think of where to begin on the talk page with all of the issues this page has. I think it needs to be almost completely re-written. Especially with these policies in mind: WP:NOTEVERYTHING - WP:NOTFANSITE - WP:NOTADVERTISING - WP:NOTPROMOTION - WP:IINFO. But I have noticed there are templates from 2013 and 2014, so I'm beginning to question the notability of this article in general, since an article with such issues would normally be cleaned up within days if it were of even just a semi-popular or important person. 24.236.167.213 (talk) 14:09, 2 June 2019 (UTC)
Guitar Rig & Signal Flow
[edit]Do we really need the empty Guitar Rig & Signal Flow section under the "Musical style" header? It seems to me that it is irrelevant since there is an exhaustive Guitar Rig section right after. Permafrost46 (talk) 17:56, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
Glasgow kiss
[edit]is that song called Glasgow kiss? and if so, why? was expecting him to be from Scotland or related at least, but he's not.. so... why the name? cheers :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.253.99.176 (talk) 12:26, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
Crufty lead
[edit]The lead in its current edition needs a major cleanup. Do we really need to list every magazine and every award he's received? It reads like a fan letter rather than an encyclopaedia entry. If no-one offers, I'll have to do it myself, but I'm torn on what to keep or zap in terms of all that magazine stuff. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 14:49, 3 September 2020 (UTC)
- Mac Dreamstate we could create a separate section for the second and third paragraphs (something like "Reception", "Accolades", "Legacy", idk) and just leave a sentence like "Petrucci has been lauded by some as one of the best guitarists of his generation" or something like that at the lead.
