- 1803 – Anson P. Morrill, president of Maine Central Railroad 1864-1866 and 1873-1875, is born (d. 1887).[1]
- 1891 – The funeral train (pictured) for John A. Macdonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada, is operated between Ottawa and Kingston, Ontario.
- 1932 – The Great Western Railway's Cheltenham Flyer passenger train sets a new speed record as the Castle class 4-6-0 locomotive Tregenna Castle pulls the train from Swindon to Paddington, a distance of 77¼ miles (124.3 km), at an average speed of 81.7 mph (131.5 km/h).
- 2003 – Livio Dante Porta, Argentinian steam locomotive mechanical engineer, dies (b. 1922).
