UW students
[edit]Any other UW students here on wikipedia? [[User:Halibutt|Halibutt]] 03:35, Sep 2, 2004 (UTC)
I'm one. --ish_warsaw 10:56, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
Is "Masters Degree in International Management, International Business Programme" an economics degree at University of Warsaw? Here in Finland one of your graduates got elected to the Parliament of Finland. And there was/is a confusion if it is a "Economics and Business Administration" kind of University Masters degree. --ArcticGravyTrain (talk) 06:35, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
racism at Warsaw university
[edit]Seems there should be some mention of the quota system which operated at the univesity in the 1930s which set limits on the number of Jews who would be admitted to different facilities.
Wrong name of the university
[edit]The correct name in English should be:
== (the) University of Warsaw ==
For some time the authorities of the University of Warsaw have been promoting the form: Warsaw University, which is a misunderstanding. It is probably based in the name Adam Mickiewicz University but that is a different kind of name, where Adam Mickiewicz is the namesake. If Adam Mickiewicz University were not named after Adam Mickiewicz and if it derived its name from the city of Poznan, it would most probably be called University of Poznan and not Poznan University.
== I suggest the wrong form Warsaw University be replaced with University of Warsaw ==
(just like University of Oxford, for example).
Perhaps someone can also convince the authorities of the University of Warsaw to abandon the akward form which they are using now. Fon 17:32, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
important information about redirection
[edit]The name of "Uniwersytet Warszawski" in English
[edit]The main entry is now the "University of Warsaw" and anyone searching for "Warsaw University" is redirected there.
The reason for redirecting is that the name "Warsaw University" is not the correct one - in spite of the recent tendency of the authorities of the university iteself to promote it. Most probably it has been modelled on the names of universities that are named after people, like Yale, Harvard or, in Poland, Adam Mickiewicz -- which are, accordingly, called Yale, Harvard or Adam Mickiewicz University -- instead of the names such as the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge or the University of California, Los Angeles.
The former content of "Warsaw University" is now in the page "University of Warsaw". The authors and their contributions remain here. The appropriate note has been left in the discussion page of the University of Warsaw page. Fon 01:02, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Warsaw University
[edit]One speaks commonly of "Oxford University" and "Cambridge University," and so forgets that they may have official names such as "University of Oxford" and "University of Cambridge." To the extent that the latter are indeed the official names, it may be desirable to title their respective articles in that style, with redirects from the other versions.
For my own purposes, however, I am likely to continue calling the subject of this article "Warsaw University," and that city's medical school — "Warsaw Medical School" rather than "Medical Academy in (or of) Warsaw" or "Medical University of Warsaw." Nihil novi 23:41, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
- And, yes, I have used "Poznań University" in scholarly publications. It is much handier in certain constructions, e.g. compare "Poznań University's" with "University of Poznań's." Nihil novi 23:54, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
The authorities of the University of Warsaw approve the correct form of the name
[edit]The following comes from the official website of the University:
Warsaw University changes its official English name
[edit]We kindly inform you that in accordance with the new Statute of Warsaw University of June 21, 2006, the English name of our institution has been changed as of October 1, 2006 to the University of Warsaw. Both names ( Warsaw University, University of Warsaw) are equally valid and may be used on information materials/symbols etc., until the end of academic year 2006/07 - that is, until September 30, 2007.
Nothing to be added - Fon 21:11, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
contradiction
[edit]There is a contradiction in the article:
"On 5 May 1917 the Russian Provisional Government decided to close the University of Warsaw. The decision took effect on 1 July 1917; on the same day, the University of the Don, now called Rostov State University (Southern Federal University since 2006), was inaugurated.[2]"
"During the World War I Warsaw was seized by Germany in 1915. In order to win the Poles for their case and secure the Polish area behind the front lines the governments of Germany and Austria-Hungary allowed for a certain liberalization of life in Poland. In accordance with the concept of Mitteleuropa, German military authorities permitted several Polish social and educational societies to be recreated. One of these was Warsaw University."
Which is it? Did the Russians successfully close the university or did the Germans keep it open?
Rick Norwood (talk) 20:23, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
The Russians closed *their* evacuated Warsaw University, the Germans allowed a different 'Warsaw University' to open in Warsaw. In other words for some time between 1915 and 1917 there were two different institutions calling themselves 'Warsaw University'. There's no contradiction in here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.24.147.14 (talk) 11:50, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

Table list of faculties
[edit]I've started creating the table list of faculties that would includ taught subjets and link to faculties' website. I don't know if it's good idea, so I ditched its development. But feel free to use it.

Endowment - incorrect information
[edit]The information about PLN 1.8B endowment is incorrect. The cited source does not give any such information. I'm an employee of that university and, as far as I know, it does not have an endowment. The PLN 1.8B is approximately the annual budget of the UW. Rpoleski (talk) 17:56, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
